In addition to covering all usual respiratory tract pathogens, antibiotics prescribed to treat CAP need to be effective against many resistant pathogens. This rise in resistance to previously recommended agents has been a cause of great concern to infectious disease specialists, with surveillance data indicating a rising trend in resistance around the world. In Europe the incidence of penicillin non-susceptible S. pneumoniae ranges from a low of 1-5% in Northern European countries to figures up to 50% in France and Spain.
