Levofloxacin has a lengthy safety record, much more extensive than that of other respiratory fluoroquinolones. In contrast, there is now concern that the other respiratory fluoroquinolone, gatifloxacin, may cause adverse effects related to glucose metabolism, and while moxifloxacin has excellent activity against S. pneumoniae, it does not have the worldwide usage experience that levofloxacin has.
