We are convinced, based on evidence, that an AECB in the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) severity stages II, III and IV should be treated with antibiotics. Prevention of any AECB by antibiotics, and also the prevention of long-term loss of lung function, are not possible and it has not been convincingly shown that this approach is effective.
