The role of atypical pathogens has clearly been shown to differ around the world. Canada and the US tend to have higher incidences of atypical infections than those reported in Europe, with the Netherlands having particularly low incidences of these infections. It has been noted that due to improved diagnostic techniques, especially using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the identification of atypical pathogens and viruses may increase.
