Question 23
Do you know if resistance rates among the fluoroquinolones have changed?
Yes, rates of ciprofloxacin resistance among S. pneumoniae have increased significantly, from less than 1% in 1997 to 4.2% in 2005. Subgroup analysis also demonstrated that ciprofloxacin resistance was greatest in people older than 64 years of age. In comparison the same study demonstrated current rates of resistance to gatifloxacin, gemifloxacin, levofloxacin, and moxifloxacin as 1.6%, 1.0%, 1.1%, and 1.0%, respectively (77).
