The pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes a variety of respiratory tract infections which are normally treated with antipseudomal drugs. However, some of these infections fail to respond to antipseudomonal drugs alone and combinations with other drugs are necessary.

The study reported here describes the effect of a combination of levofloxacin with meropenem on clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa in vitro but in conditions similar to those found clinically.

An experimental device is described which is able to program blood levels of levofloxacin and meropenem in advance and demonstrates the effects of treatment with either drug alone or a combination of the two. The results obtained suggest that a combination of levofloxacin and meropenem will exhibit high bactericidal activity when a single agent is ineffective.
